How to Prepare Your Garden for Autumn

With summer now becoming a distant memory, it's time to look ahead and prepare your garden for autumn and those crisp, misty mornings, the brown and orange leafy autumnal hues, and of course, those cosy candle-lit nights.

Your autumn garden preparation tasks that you should ensure to complete before the cooler weather sets in include harvesting garden produce, preparing your lawn, and weather-proofing garden structures like your gazebo and garden shelter

Here are, in our opinion, the most important autumn gardening tips to focus on in these upcoming weeks:

Harvesting garden produce

First things first, it is time to reap the rewards of your hard work, through harvesting any garden fruit and vegetables that you may have grown. Not only is it the season to enjoy your fresh produce, but if they're left any longer, your plant crops may become susceptible to rot and disease. After all, no one wants to see their hard work and efforts go to waste.

Planting spring bulbs

Secondly, we recommend getting a head start on planting some bulbs. Whilst spring might seem a long way away, planting spring-flowering bulbs in September like daffodils, tulips, and crocuses is a great idea. This is because your garden soil will still be warm from the summer, allowing the planted bulbs to sprout roots before the coldness of winter, ensuring a vibrant display come spring. Make sure to choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil for growing your spring flowers, such as the outside of your gazebo or garden room to create a vibrant floral border.

Autumn garden preparation and maintenance

Tasks like pruning, deadheading, and lawn care are all essential for preparing and maintaining your garden over winter. These activities stimulate stronger growth, making your plants more resilient to frost and cold. For instance, raking and spiking your lawn helps remove dead grass, moss, and debris, improving aeration and allowing nutrients to reach the soil. This will help your grassroots grow deeply and produce a stronger lawn during the colder months.

Protecting garden furniture

As much as we hope for warm weather in late summer, the rainy and damp weather often arrives promptly. It's important to protect your garden furniture so that it can last for many more summers. Typically, the end of September is the best time to clean and store your outdoor furniture. Wipe it down to remove any dirt and debris, and then store it in a dry, sheltered area such as your garden room or a shelter to shield it from the elements.

Enjoying your garden room year-round

Even in cold weather, you can still make the most of your garden with a winter garden room. This additional space in your home allows you to enjoy your garden even when it’s cold and rainy. With insulation and various heating options, such as underfloor heating, you can stay warm and comfortable in your garden just like you would indoors. Our TRADA-certified craftsmen use residential-grade insulation materials to design garden rooms that are perfect for year-round use. The Crown Buckingham model offers a versatile garden room retreat with an outdoor covered area, protecting your garden furniture from the elements.
